First things first: does your Revolut account take BACS?
With a high-street bank this question never comes up — of course it takes BACS. With Revolut, it's the single most important check on this page. Depending on your plan, region and when you opened the account, your GBP details may or may not support inbound BACS (the rail DWP uses for regular benefit payments). If they don't, your payment can fail, bounce back, or sit in limbo while DWP tries to trace it — and no amount of checking the clock will help.
So before anything else: open the Revolut app, tap into your GBP account, and view the full account details — sort code, account number and supported payment types. You're looking for explicit BACS or Direct Debit inbound support. Can't find it? Ask Revolut's in-app support directly and get a clear yes before you hand those details to DWP. Five minutes here prevents weeks of "where's my money" later.
Switching benefits to Revolut? Beat the BACS window
This is where switchers get caught. DWP doesn't send your payment on payday morning — it submits the BACS file two to three working days beforehand. That means there's a hidden deadline: if you update your account details with DWP the day before you're due, you've almost certainly missed that cycle's file. The payment will either go to your old bank or fail outright.
The rule is simple. Tell DWP about your new Revolut details at least 2–3 working days before payday — and ideally a full week, to absorb weekends, bank holidays and DWP processing queues. Update via your Universal Credit journal, the relevant benefit helpline, or your State Pension account, then double-check the change shows correctly. Keep the old account open until you've seen at least one successful payment land in Revolut; closing it early is how money ends up bouncing between banks.
Switching the week before Christmas or Easter? Add even more margin. Bank-holiday weeks compress DWP's processing windows, and a missed file then means waiting through the holiday itself — see our bank holiday rules for each 2026 bridge.
What overnight arrival looks like in the Revolut app
Once eligibility is settled, timing behaves much like anywhere else: regular BACS benefits clear overnight on the due date, and you should allow until 7:00 AM. Exact posting varies with account setup and DWP's submission, so there's no Revolut-specific minute to circle — watch your app feed on the morning itself rather than trying to predict it. Pull down to refresh if the feed looks stale; push notifications normally fire as the credit lands.
Two quirks worth knowing. First, weekends and bank holidays move DWP dates to the last working day before, just as with every bank — the overnight arrival follows the shifted date. Second, Faster Payments sit outside the overnight pattern entirely: DWP corrections, budgeting advances and some one-off payments can arrive within minutes at any hour, so an unexpected mid-afternoon credit is usually that rail, not a glitch.
Budgeting when your payday rail just changed
Moving banks reshuffles more than the logo on your statement. Direct debits tied to the old account need moving or they'll bounce; standing orders don't transfer themselves; and any bills timed for "payday morning" deserve a re-check against the new arrival pattern. Give yourself a one-cycle overlap: run both accounts in parallel for a month, keep a small buffer in each, and only close the old one once Revolut has received a full, on-time cycle of every benefit you claim.
Morning of payday and Revolut's quiet? Run these checks
Past 7:00 AM on a confirmed due date with nothing in the feed — work this order. First, confirm DWP holds your exact current sort code and account number (one transposed digit is enough to fail a BACS credit). Second, re-verify the due date allows for weekends, bank holidays and — for State Pension — the NINO-day mapping, using a benefit calculator. Third, check your DWP journal for verification or award messages. Then escalate through our payment not received guide, which sets out who to contact and in what order.
Indicative timings: overnight BACS arrival varies by account setup and DWP submission — allow until 7:00 AM and confirm the exact details in-app with Revolut and DWP. See how we calculate. We are an independent guide, not DWP or HMRC — timings above are a planning estimate.
