DWP Payment Not Received? What to Do 2026

Don't panic — most "missing" payments are a bank-holiday shift or overnight BACS timing. Work through these steps in order.

Do this first (2 minutes)

1) Confirm your due date with a benefit calculator · 2) Check bank holiday shifts · 3) Check your bank app (including pending) after 7:00 AM · 4) Only then call — see helpline numbers & hours.

Step 1 — Confirm your real due date

GOV.UK states that if your payment date falls on a weekend or a bank holiday, you are usually paid on the working day before — and notes this may be different for Child Benefit. So a "late" payment is often simply an early one you already received. Count forward from your last payment (every 4 weeks for PIP, Child Benefit and State Pension; monthly for Universal Credit) and cross-check against bank holiday dates.

Step 2 — Allow for overnight BACS timing

DWP and HMRC pay by BACS Direct Credit, which clears overnight — typically between midnight and about 7:00 AM depending on your bank (see bank payment times and how BACS works). If it is still the early hours, wait until mid-morning before escalating.

Step 3 — Check your bank and your award

  • Bank: check pending/greyed-out transactions and that your sort code and account number are still correct. For Child Benefit, GOV.UK explicitly advises checking your payment date and contacting your bank before calling the Child Benefit Office.
  • Award/journal: check your UC journal, online account or latest award letter — payments can stop or change if you didn't report a change (new bank details, a child turning 16, moving in with someone else, or not replying to an official letter).
  • First payments: a first Universal Credit payment takes around 5 weeks after your claim; a first Child Benefit payment can take up to 12 weeks (backdated up to 3 months). These are normal waits, not missing payments.

Step 4 — Contact the right office

If the date, bank and award all look right and the money still hasn't arrived by the end of the working day, contact the office that pays your benefit with your National Insurance number to hand. Use the correct line: DWP helpline numbers and opening hours (UC, PIP, State Pension, Jobcentre Plus).

Frequently Asked Questions

My benefit hasn't gone in — what should I check first?
First confirm your expected date (weekends and bank holidays move DWP payments to the previous working day), then check your bank account including pending transactions, and check your award letter, journal or online account for any change. Only then contact the office that pays your benefit.
What time should DWP payments arrive?
Most BACS benefit payments clear overnight — usually between midnight and about 7:00 AM on the due date, depending on your bank. If nothing has arrived by mid-morning on a normal working day, work through the checklist on this page.
Who do I call about a missing benefit payment?
Contact the office that pays your benefit: your UC journal or the Universal Credit helpline for UC, the PIP enquiry line for PIP, the Pension Service for State Pension, and the Child Benefit Office for Child Benefit. Have your National Insurance number to hand. See our helpline numbers and opening hours guide.
