Work out your date in 10 seconds
Take your most recent PIP payment date and keep adding four weeks. When a date in that chain lands on 25 or 28 December, that payment comes on 24 December instead. Nothing else in the chain changes. Three examples cover most people:
- The Friday cycle: paid Friday 11 December as normal → next due Friday 25 December → actually paid Thursday 24 December → following payment Friday 22 January, back to normal.
- The Monday cycle: paid Monday 30 November → next due Monday 28 December → actually paid Thursday 24 December → following payment Monday 25 January.
- The untouched cycle: due Tuesday 29 December → paid Tuesday 29 December. The 29th is an ordinary working day, so Christmas never touches this cycle at all.
Notice what the early payment does not do: it doesn't pull the whole cycle forward. January's payment is anchored to your original due dates, so if you're paid on 24 December your next payment is a shade over four weeks away — worth knowing before the early money gets absorbed into Christmas.
The £10 Christmas Bonus: PIP qualifies
Separate from your regular payment, PIP is one of the benefits that qualifies for the DWP Christmas Bonus — a one-off, tax-free £10, paid automatically in early December if you were receiving PIP during the qualifying week (the first full week of December). It arrives on its own, not attached to a PIP payment, and shows on your statement as "DWP XB". No claim, no form — and if you receive several qualifying benefits, it's still just the one £10.
Ten pounds won't change anyone's Christmas, and the amount hasn't moved in decades. But every year people see "DWP XB" on a statement and wonder if it's a mistake or a scam — now you know it's neither.
Due on Christmas Eve itself?
If your cycle lands on Thursday 24 December, you're paid that day as normal — it's a full working day for BACS. Expect the money at your bank's usual early-morning time; our bank payment times pages cover when each bank typically shows DWP payments.
Scotland and Northern Ireland
In Scotland, PIP awards are transferring to Adult Disability Payment, paid by Social Security Scotland. If yours has already moved, your payment follows Social Security Scotland's arrangements rather than DWP's — the same roll-back-over-bank-holidays logic applies, but your SSS letter is the document that counts. In Northern Ireland, PIP is run by the Department for Communities on the same 4-weekly pattern, and the Christmas shifts are the same as above.
Sources & accuracy: bank holidays per GOV.UK — UK bank holidays; Christmas Bonus eligibility and the qualifying week per GOV.UK — Christmas Bonus. Early payment on the previous working day follows DWP's established festive pattern; DWP publishes its confirmed schedule in November. We are an independent guide, not DWP.
